Independent candidate for Sturt, Dr Verity Cooper, believes voting for a Community Independent is voting for a new kind of politics — one where your voice can make a difference.
Dr Cooper’s family has lived and worked in Sturt for six generations. She’s no career politician like many in Canberra — she’s been a trusted GP for 35 years and was invited to stand for office.
A group of disillusioned Sturt residents chose her because they believe she would be an excellent choice to represent Sturt.
“We need an independent candidate who will stand up for what people want, not parties,” Dr Cooper said. “Someone who can offer practical, evidence-based solutions designed with you in mind, not party agendas.
“The era of the two major parties dominating the national conversation is over, driven by voters sick of indulgent party politics. By voting independent, you get a representative who will put our community first — instead of party ideology — and be very influential in a minority government.”
Dr Cooper outlines her key policy ideas:
- Integrity: "I answer only to the people of Sturt — not party bosses or rich donors."
- Cost of Living Relief: "I’ve listened to your stories. It’s time for real solutions, not short-term band-aids.”
- Climate Action: "This is the defining issue of our time and I won’t back down from strong measures to tackle climate change."
- Housing Affordability: “We need bold, evidence-based policy — not electioneering. Future generations need homes, not headlines.”
- Energy: "Let’s finish what South Australia started and lead the world in clean, renewable, affordable energy."
- Healthcare: "Healthcare is a right, not a privilege. I’ll work hard to make that a reality in Sturt."
- Education: "Education is the foundation of a fair and thriving society. I’ll fight for a system that works for everyone."
- Environment: “Protecting our environment is about safeguarding our health, our economy and our way of life for future generations.”
“As your Independent MP, I will approach every decision in Parliament with two guiding questions: What is good for the people of Sturt? And what is good for the future generations? It’s time to make our local voices heard and hold politicians to account.”
About Dr Verity Cooper:
